Llewelyn Ash: A Journey Rooted in Nature and Art

Llewelyn Ash has always felt a deep connection to his surroundings, a bond nurtured by his upbringing in the lush Adelaide Hills. Immersed in the natural world of flora and fauna, his artistic journey began at home, with both parents as influential artists—Glen Ash, renowned for his evocative oil paintings, and Janet Ayliffe, a celebrated watercolourist and printmaker. Surrounded by art and nature, Llewelyn began sketching the animals around him—chooks, ducks, dogs, and donkeys—capturing the essence of his environment.

As his love for surfing grew, so did his inspiration. Traversing the South Australian coastline, Llewelyn filled his sketchbooks with images of the ocean, its vibrant sea life, and the serene beach landscapes.

Since 2008, Llewelyn has been crafting his art in glass, starting with glassblowing at the University of South Australia. His talent earned him a prestigious position as a Jam Factory Associate, and his work has been showcased in major exhibitions across Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne, including the Winter Lights Exhibition at Federation Square. His accolades include the Design Institute of Australia Award, being a finalist for the Australian National Glass Museum Student Award, receiving the JamFactory Pilchuck Scholarship in Seattle, and recognition as a Young Artist for the Whyalla Art Prize, Brighton Sculpture Prize, and Waterhouse Youth Art Prize.
